School Organizing part 2

Soooo...The kids are at the age they are packing their own lunches.  Sigh.  We figure it's a good way to have them learn about balancing meals, and get a little responsibility sprinkled on top as a bonus.  If they are busy doing, they don't have time to get into trouble.  Haha.  Plus, one less thing we have to do every night.  Can we all just get an "amen"?

Since we have lots of kids, we need lots of food...and organization.

I admit, most times the first week, I found a sandwich and a bunch of crackers and chips in there.  We "edited" and coached on adding some fruit, dairy, etc. to the bag.

I figured I would share how we organize our lunch routines and why we do it this way.

1.  We pack our own snack packs:  We do this, because it's cheaper.  Period.  I feel like I'm signing off their college tuition when I price out pre-packaged chips, etc.  Wow!  Buy a big bag, and split it up into snack baggies.  It sounds time consuming, but it really only takes me about 3-5 minutes for the week's worth.

2.  We separate them by snacks, fruits, and "treats".  This helps them grab from one section at a time and not load up on one.

3.  If you have the option of a refrigerator door (you can just use a section or regular inside drawer if not-it works too), use a section of that for them to "grab and go" some healthy options.

4.  Here's some lunch options I have used:  baby carrots, apple slices, string cheese, greek yogurt, unsweetened applesauce, fruit cups in juice (not syrup), pudding cups, granola bars, peanuts, triscuits, pretzels, goldfish, fresh green beans, small peanut butter cups with fruit/pretzels, and cottage cheese cups.  In addition to the "add-ons"-they can make themselves sandwiches, grab mac n' cheese cups, leftovers, turkey wraps, soups, etc.

Organizing for School

So..how do you organize seven kids for school?  Well, let's be honest..really only 6 kids.  After moving only a month ago, we are in the midst of school preparations, potty training, a new job, hatching chickens, planning a wedding, oh and did I mention getting a house into order?  The name of the game seems to be sanity, patience and love.  How do you organize a big family to keep all of the big three flowing?  Well, here are just a few to get started-
1.  Have everything contained and separated so as to avoid confusion and fights.  We've all been there-let's be honest:  "He took my scissors, she stole my glue stick, I can't find my ____".  Well, you get the idea.  By having a bin for everyone with their needed school/project supplies at home, we make everyone accountable to whats in their own bin.

2.  Hooks:  Kids don't like hangers.  Honestly, I don't like hanging things up either.  Things move along much quicker if kids can use hooks.  Without them, backpacks wind up in a pile on the floor.  When you have 7 kids, that's a big pile.  It creates chaos and morning meltdowns.  Backpacks are packed and hung the night before.
